On Monday 11 November 2019, we invited Alec, a local 96 year old veteran, into school to join us for Armistice Day. He was interviewed by the ‘mini leadership team’ (12 children) who asked him questions about his life as a soldier in the war. Alec brought his army uniform, medals and old photos of himself as a young soldier to show the children.
Then together, all children, including 2 year olds from childcare, went outside with Alec to hold hands around the cenotaph for one minute’s silence, at 11am.
To make our day complete, we came back inside and gave Alec and cup of tea and a slice of poppy cake made especially for the day, by our cook, Lynn.
4 year old Emily presented Alec with a painting she made of poppies, with writing underneath saying ‘poppies for the soldiers’.
What a very special day to remember forever.
