Every child has a journal that focuses specifically on mark making and writing. Staff collect examples of children’s drawings in the journals at regular intervals, writing little notes about what they say about their work. Listening to how children engage and talk to a familiar adult about their work enables us to gather lots of information about a child’s overall development and progress, which means we can plan to give them lots of opportunities to develop good reading and writing skills.
The journals are kept in nursery and are accessible to children and families, to look at together. We encourage parents to become involved in the journal, sharing drawings from home, which helps us to see the child holistically.
The journal is a very precious document, treasured by families forever. They are presented to our children to take home, at a special Celebration Concert on the last day of the summer term.
